Sometime in the mid-70’s a new sound was emerging… a lustrous, shimmer which came to be known as “chorus” or the “ensemble sound.”
After a few fast (and wild) years, this captivating new sound had earned the affection and reverence of countless musicians, producers and listeners alike lending to further pursuit and advancement of the process and designs. Within a decade of its debut, a significant advancement was made within the chorus world.
While the chorus designs of the time employed a short, modulated delay which was then mixed back in with the original input, a few creative minds in southern California asked: “What if we add two more modulated delay lines at different times and mix them all together…” …and a legend was born.
Our chief engineer, Jack Deville, has always been fascinated by new and unconventional approaches, especially those which push the limits of what would seem to be an established process/sound, and after learning about the fabled “tri-chorus,” set to work to see what this avenue had to offer, and the results are astounding.
Here at Jack Deville LTD. & Mr. Black pedals, we call it: the “Tri-Chorale,” and it is stunning.
With its three independent delay lines modulating in concert with one another, the Tri-Chorale births incredible dimension and sparkle, elevating a familiar sound to downright legendary. At the heart of the Tri-Chorale’s modulation engine lie three meticulously-tuned delay lines, all sharing a common LFO, but working together at independent delay times and phase angles. The magic lies within how the delay triplets interact with each other (and your dry signal), forging a sound which is as organic as it is beautifully unpredictable.
You can hear it nearly instantly. That “I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I love it” is exactly what the Tri-Chorale is intended to do. What seemed like a simple addition to an established format brings new depth, dimension and life to a quintessential, classic tone.
Sometimes, the output is greater than the sum of the parts, and the Tri-Chorale is a prime example.
Refined to three simple controls, the Tri-Chorale allows you to carve out the width of your sweeps, how fast those sweeps will occur and then just how much of your modulated delay triplet you’d like to include: from zero to 100%. True-bypass, “industry standard” pedal power, and matched impedances make the Tri-Chorale a real treat to add to your pedalboard.
Looks can be deceiving and while it may look simple, you may just be shocked as to just how many sounds you can pull out of this little box; from mild to wild and everything in-between, the Tri-Chorale and be subtle as a soft summer breeze, or wild as a friend who’s “Had too many.”
